From 14 to 18 October 2019, Common Effort took place in Berlin, Germany to discuss security, justice and development challenges and opportunities for the G5 Sahel countries of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger in a comprehensive way.
To set the scene for the new course of action 1 German/Netherlands Corps (1GNC) organized a Sahel knowledge development workshop in Münster in February. Members of the Common Effort Community and Sahel experts met in Münster to develop a common situational awareness on the Sahel region and Sahel G5. This workshop functions as a preparation tool to set the agenda for Common Effort 2019 which will be the first year of a total 3 years focusing on the Sahel region. Conflict dynamics, operational challenges to security and peace keeping efforts of UN, EU and countries like France, Germany and the Netherlands were topics on the agenda.
This report complements the Common Effort 2018 Brochure which you can find on this page also. The report shows the results of our evaluation based on feedback from the participants in the Common Effort exercise 2018. In addition, you will find a summary of the background presentations and the Theme Group reports based on the work during the Common Effort exercise in June 2018.
Common Effort 2018 has been a major success thanks to our participants from political, academic, international, non-governmental and military organisations who developed innovative, comprehensive and pragmatic proposals addressing complex issues within Tunisia. Common Effort Exercise 2018 will focus on the situation in Tunisia and its region. Participants from IOs, NGOs, ministries, military, think tanks, and research institutes will work together and share their experiences in different thematic groups.
This report summarizes and reflects upon the activities and achievements of Common Effort 2017 by highlighting our main activities throughout the year followed by an overview regarding the Common Effort Exercise and the High Level Event in Berlin from 29 May until 1 June 2017.
